Local State College area author/illustrator Emily Dolbin wears many labels including environmental scientist and nature lover, so it’s only fitting that some of her branding session took place at the Penn State Arboretum. Offset by neighboring Palmer Museum of Art, it’s an easy place for any artist to find inspiration, but especially for Emily, with her many plant-filled scenes and expressive characters. (The sweetest little critters you ever did see!) Proving once again that art and nature go hand in hand. So much so, in fact, that Emily not only creates her own ink using black walnuts, she also enjoys using soil-based watercolor pigments (created by another special local brand, Zoils & Pigments, whose creator, Zoelie Rivera-Ocasio, also happens to be a scientist!)
If you’re interested in connecting with Emily (and other artists) about the world of children’s literature, she’s created a special community called The Story Artists’ Path, where members find feedback, inspiration, and support. Emily is as gentle in spirit as she is talented. Her community is no doubt filled with the same.
